Optimist’s Anthem
We are optimists
We like to wake up looking forward
We like our music loud and our days creeping with pocket sized opportunities.
But when that doesn’t happen, it’s okay
Because we are optimists
Not idealists who too often break the fragile crutches of faith
After leaning on them too much, thinking actions can be mouthed as easily as daydreams.
We are optimists
We don’t just sit and think,
We stand and think,
And when we can’t stand to think no longer
We do.
We are optimists,
Not impervious to the judgements of others,
Because no one truly is no matter how many times we say it
But we are the strongest renewable energy mankind has ever seen.
Because we are optimists
Solar powered, wind powered, people-powered, empowered
By the things that happen to us,
And the things that we make happen
Willpower and talent
warming our dreams, pouring out chance,
And making the coffee warm again.
We are optimists,
We are aeroplanes that life can shoot down twenty times a day but never touch the ground
We are microphone speakers with a voice of incalculable volume
All scientists know
Is that we deafen at the whisper.
We are the plastic bags that hang with wintry leaves
Still accepting invites to dance from the wind
We are optimists,
But we are not naive
Like in the fairytales alcoholics pass round like empty glasses
To empty seats
We are optimists
We too are sometimes afraid,
So become occasionally entangled in the warm, hourglass figure of pessimism,
hands interlocked with histories rich as soulmates, but not because we were in love
But because we were afraid
of our life falling apart,
melting like handkerchiefs lost in the ocean…
But because we are optimists,
We can never truly lose everything,
Because attitude alone is something,
Having a friend to talk to is someone
And if you become a master of practice
You can do this something to everyone
As long as you include yourself
We are optimists,
We will always recover our colour like the sky on daybreak
After enduring a week of rainfall
Our mood never failing to rise like the lungs
Of someone who is running for their life without using their legs.
We are optimists,
other people will always have bigger reasons to be happy
the job of their dreams,
feats that blow ours out of the water.
someone with who they share perfect chemistry
we do not compare ourselves to our equals
Seeing as we’re optimists,
for the most part. But when we do,
remember that chance is not biased,
and that there is nothing but darkness behind those endless blue skies
Exist in your own time zone,
Waiting for opportunity,
because
Us optimists,
Can see incoming miracles,
Looking forward to tomorrow even when we’re blinded by the pain
But we are more resilient than the deadliest diseases
Because we are the emissaries of this certain philosophy
That being happy is more than a phase,
More than the ecstasy
More than the numbers on a surface
the letters on the screen,
We are optimists
We will continue to take every failure life gives us until it sounds as empty as our aging doubt,
Respecting all along the way,
And we will embrace each success like a newborn child
Nursing them as they take their first steps
Into the fields of possibility
We are optimists!
We will go to poetry slams and open mikes speaking and hearing poetry about optimists,
Wishing that was who we truly were
And we know that if we keep repeating it to ourselves
We can one day believe it.
I will always be optimistic
That together, we can be optimists
