When was the last time you appreciated a song from the very first listen? If you’re anything like me, you will usually have to listen to a track several times over before it crawls into your ears, claims squatter’s rights and refuses to leave.
‘Lizard Baby’, the new track from the increasingly experimental Pulled Apart By Horses, most certainly is one of those songs that grabs you by the throat and doesn’t ease its grip one bit.
It could have been all too easy for the guys to saturate themselves to appeal to a wider market but if anything, the two new songs from their upcoming third album Blood that have been showcased so far prove their credentials as out and out alternative supremos even more. Seldom can you hear a band completely nailing a diatribe against an infant but they do and with some aplomb.
That might need a bit of context, that last bit.
The title of the track refers to Prince George who, as any fan of David Icke’s theories will know, is apparently a lizard in disguise along with the rest of the Royal Family. You’re sold already, right?
Once the teasing opening bars and the crunch of the bass guitar ensue, PABH will have you entranced and if you’re familiar with their earlier work, you’ll know that their efforts land each and every time. Few bands around these days have the mettle to deliver a pure rock sound but these guys certainly do and I for one am grateful for that.
It’s not an insult to compare the band from Leeds with Queens of the Stone Age. Remember that bass battle scene from Scott Pilgrim vs the World? Seeing the equivalent of that between these two would result in walls collapsing, glass shattering and everything becoming pregnant within a four mile radius. They are the saviours of modern rock and that’s not something you can say lightly if you don’t really believe it.
Those who appreciated PABH’s first two albums will not be disappointed by this three minute slice of progressive and peculiar rock. If this is your first experience with the band and you like sound in general, do yourself a favour and acquaint your ears with pure riffical genius as soon as you can.
‘Lizard Baby’ is available on iTunes.’Blood’ is released on the September 1st, available for pre-order here.
