Anyone who knows anything about me knows that I love a burger. When I’m on a budget, it’ll be a burger in a cheap pub, when I go out for a nice dinner or a date, I’ll pretend I don’t order a burger often and try the nice one at a restaurant. I’ve even built my own site dedicated to finding the best burger in the world. So The Great American Burger Book is right up my street.

From the get-go, this is a book that’s serious about its topic. There’s an introduction, that states the importance of food, and “food with a good story”. Following that, there’s simple guides that blow other cookbooks, which assume you have everything in your kitchen, out of the water. Here, the book shows the simplicity and elegance of the burger, no fancy tools needed, and anything you do need you can pick up cheap. Moving past this, there’s some excellent points on sourcing meat from your local butcher for quality, and an interesting piece on the importance of the burger bun.

One of the most interesting things about this book is it’s not just a recipe book, it’s a travel and history book. It takes you across different parts of the USA, exploring the history of the burger and finding out what this interpretation does differently.

As the book progresses more unique recipes appear. The Bacon-Avocado Toast Burger, for example, is one that particularly peaked my interest. This is a book aimed at fans of meat, so alas, vegetarians, this may not be for you, but it could give you some interesting ideas to spice up your veggie burgers than simply emulating the standard formula.

Sometimes I wish the book had more pictures. Whenever they are in the book, they;re beautifully photographed, and make the reader’s mouth water. Ultimately, even though they’re great when illustrating the history and certain recipes, I wanted a few more to help guide a novice like me with my journey.

The Great American Burger Book is a fantastic book that is completely dedicated to its titular food. It’s a love letter to America, and the signature dish that everybody loves. People should pick it up, for some of these simple tricks can make your burgers something special and unique, with very little extra effort. It’s a real gem, so make sure to invite me over for dinner when you try it out.
