REVIEW: Caribou – ‘Can’t Do Without You’

Caribou

Caribou

You know those tedious people who always say stupid shit like: “God music these days is terrible it was so much better back in my day”?

Those walking buzzkills are really fucking annoying and the best way to stop them dead in their tracks is to play the new Caribou song ‘Can’t Do Without You’, which is so awesome that I want to have a civil partnership with it. So good!

I really like the deceptive low-key hypnotic intro before the wonky-but-soulful vocals show up for a bit and then BOOM, the song kicks in good and proper and we’re whisked off to Summertime groove heaven. So smooth!

I also love how the whole thing builds to a crescendo of samples and fuzzy noise stuff towards the end, yet still maintains its easy-on-the-ear accessibility as my head nods continually like the dog from the Churchill ads. The build-up-and-release vibe feels like the soundtrack to a montage of all the Incredibly Deep And Meaningful Moments that we’ve had so far this year before easing off the gas and bringing us gently home. So emotional!

This song is just as at home in front of thousands of gurners having it in a field as it is in some North London toilet where people pay £12.50 for half a pint of obscure Japanese craft beer. This is music to make people smile and dance and come together, sexually if need be. So egalitarian!

Anyway this song is a proper banger. Caribou will be in London next month for ATP’s Jabberwocky festival, which this author is attending with bells on. Altogether now: “Can’t dooo without can’t dooo without can’t dooo without can’t dooo without…”
