Red Dead Redemption 2 is now the second biggest launch of all-time in entertainment with another Rockstar game, Grand Theft Auto V, still on top. This is all of entertainment, whether that’s films, games, or anything else.
With $725 million in worldwide retail sell-through since the game launched on Friday, it’s comfortably the biggest selling game of the year. For context, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 earned itself $500 million over the same time period, but Black Ops 4 is also available on PC whereas RDR 2 is just PS4 and Xbox One (for the time being).
The full list of achievements and records broken, according to a Rockstar press release:
– Biggest opening weekend in retail sell-through across all entertainment releases;
– Second biggest launch (three days) in retail sell-through across all entertainment releases;
– Biggest entertainment launch of 2018;
– Most pre-ordered full game ever on PlayStation Network;
– Biggest day one full game sales ever on PlayStation Network;
– Biggest first three days full game sales ever on PlayStation Network.
It’s important to note here that “biggest opening weekend” refers to the actual weekend as it’s still eclipsed by GTA V, which launched on a Tuesday and earned just $815.7 million on its “opening” day. It’s unlikely that Red Red Redemption 2 will ever top the truly bananas numbers for the fifth Grand Theft Auto game, but its success cannot be denied.
Hopefully with such an obnoxious amount of money already earned for the game, Rockstar and Take-Two can calm down a little on the microtransactions for Red Dead Online and focus on creating single-player DLC as well. We can but dream.
From our Red Dead Redemption 2 review:
“Despite it having some wrinkles, Red Dead Redemption 2 introduces more than enough innovations to provide one of the most immersive and captivating open world games ever made.”
