Red Dead Redemption 2 is a big game, so big that reviewing it is going to take a fairly long time. To coincide with my playthrough, I am going to be writing my findings and thoughts in this Red Dead Diary mini-series, sans any major spoilers.
– The third entry is a little later than normal, just because I’ve had to seriously put some hours into the game itself. I’ve been playing from waking up to falling asleep since Thursday evening and I apparently still have a third of the story to play. Wish me luck.
– I had to tap out right at the start of Chapter V on Day 3. The story is absolutely wild and I love it, even if it could arguably pace itself a little better. That’s all I’m going to say on that front, but it’s definitely a more mature and sobering story than GTA V and possibly even the original Redemption.
– Movement is really start to drain my patience. It’s so hard to make fine movements, which is a such a pain in the ass when you need to just pick up a damn apple. It’s not ruining my experience at all, it just sometimes feel like Arthur is part-fridge.
– I am beginning to think that first-person is the best way to deal with a gunfight. Enemies don’t really stand in one spot for long at all and are always bobbing in one way or other (which I like), so it’s a little difficult to accurately shoot them in third.
– Speaking of first-person, you have to walk around Saint Denis with it activated. The city is so alive at all times and the blinding light and transition when leaving a building is something quite special indeed.
– I’ve barely even talked about the visuals so far. Red Dead Redemption 2 is a beautiful game that is a constant desktop wallpaper simulator. The facial animations are also gorgeous, showing the rugged charms of Arthur to the fullest.
– Love the occasional little segues when Arthur kills someone.
– I really hope this swimming snake is a glitch otherwise I will never be able to sleep again.
– Seeing small benefits to using the Honor system and being a virtuous bandit. It’s nothing major — small discounts in stores and different reactions to you in towns — but I wonder if it will change the ending at all.
– I very much enjoyed beating this racist up.
– Tried to flex with this incredibly manly style but then I realised that I looked like Galahad from The Order: 1886 and thought better of it.
– Just wanted to reiterate: I very, very much enjoyed beating this racist up.
– In the midst of all the chaos, I really enjoy milling around the camp and just chatting to people. There are a couple of occasions where the gang will throw a party and they are some of the most endearing scenes I’ve ever seen in a video game.
– There’s a staggering amount of stuff to see and do in Red Dead Redemption 2, so much so that I think I could list everything and still forget a few things. I’m going to have a hard time to cover it all in my review.
