Remember the 2013 Jeff Bridges/Ryan Reynolds Men in Black ripoff R.I.P.D? No? You’re not alone, as the nearly-ten-year-old film was released to scathing reviews and dismal box-office receipts. Despite some potential in the chemistry between its two leads, a great Kevin Bacon bad guy performance, and some fun visual effects, the movie was greeted as a chasm where imagination and entertainment go to die.
Obviously then, it makes perfect sense to put out a sequel.
Bloody Disgusting is reporting that Universal Home Entertainment is apparently getting a sequel ready by the name of R.I.P.D. 2: Rise of the Damned. We don’t know a whole lot about the movie, except that it will be rated PG-13. No word on who will be in the film either, although it seems unlikely that Jeff Bridges or Ryan Reynolds will be returning. The odds are better than not that this will be some sort of VOD endeavor, but we’re just going to have to wait and see what else is announced in the coming weeks.
Based on a very enjoyable Dark Horse comic book series, R.I.P.D. still has ample potential to be realized as an entertaining and well-made film project. The basis for the source material and movie has a man whose sudden and mysterious murder puts him at the service of a law enforcement agency tasked with managing the apparent chaos of the afterlife. There’s more than enough in that premise alone for a good movie or two, or perhaps even a series. R.I.P.D. as a property only has one film, which doesn’t have too many admirers.
