Looks Like PUBG Is Coming To PS4 Soon, But Is It Too Late?

The Xbox One console launch exclusive may have proved to be just that: PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds has been listed for release on PlayStation 4 after launching out of Game Preview on Xbox One.

The leak comes from a Korean ratings board (via Nibel), the details of which you can find here. It’s more or less a brand new listing too, which means that an announcement may be fairly imminent. Or we could be sat twiddling our thumbs for ages.

This leak shouldn’t come as a surprise as the console exclusivity was only ever temporary, even if Microsoft did chuck a tonne of marketing power behind. After launching in a sorry state on Xbox One, the game is now better following its full release, though not quite on par with its PC version — but let’s be fair: that’s not exactly the smoothest ride, either.

It will be intriguing to see how exactly PUBG launches on PS4. There’s no real Early Access system in place, even if Sony do seem to make some exceptions, such as Fortnite. Speaking of Epic’s giant, it’s going to be difficult to see how PUBG can even make a dent in the player numbers of that game, or even H1Z1. Both of those are free whereas PUBG is a paid game.

With Black Ops 4 on the horizon, it might be a case of too little and looking like selling ninety million copies based on the reception to its Blackout mode, the market-share for PUBG will shrink even further. Blackout is viewed as the middle ground between PUBG and Fortnite and is just an altogether smoother ride. Can PS4 players really afford to put up with a less than stellar launch for a paid game when they have two free options that just work and a paid option that has that AAA sheen?

Make no mistake, PUBG remains an insanely popular game: 619,945 are in-game at this time of writing on Steam. However, that number is very unlikely to reach the zenith the game was once at. Whether it’s because of the developers focusing on the wrong things or just not moving with the times quick enough, PUBG’s lost its battle royale crown and may never get it back.
