Sales of the PS4 over the 2019 Christmas period have decreased when compared to the sales of the console during the same time period. Sony’s financial results for the third quarter of FY2019, (October 1 – December 31st) revealed that Sony managed to shift 6.1 million units, which is two million less than they managed to sell the year before.
As for overall revenue, gaming saw a drop in 20% across both software and hardware, but these decreases are to be expected. The PS4 is reaching the end of its life cycle, with the PS5 scheduled to launch by the end of this year. That said, this has brought the PS4’s total units sold to an estimated 108.9 million since launch, making it one of the most successful consoles to have ever existed. It’s practically double that of the Xbox One’s current sales, so that’s something to brag about.
Sony also spoke about the PS5, specifically regarding the price point for the new console. During the same earnings call, Sony stated that their not ready to reveal how much the PS5 costs, largely because they’re waiting on competition. CFO Hiroki Totoki said: “What is not very clear or visible is – because we are competing in this space – it’s very difficult to discuss anything about the price at this point. Depending upon the price level, we may have to determine the promotion that we are going to deploy and how much costs we are prepared to pay. So it’s a question of balance.”
Essentially, Sony are waiting on Microsoft to make the first move and reveal the price of the Xbox Series X, so if possible, Sony can adjust their pricing to better compete with Microsoft. It’s solid business logic.
