Pokémon The Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution Reportedly Revealed

Mewtwo

The tradition within the Pokémon franchise is that a new animated film is released each year, and Pokémon The Movie: Everyone’s Story, the latest of these animated adventures, dropped recently in Japanese theatres this Friday. Interestingly, viewings of the film reportedly also revealed a teaser for the next movie in 2019.

This teaser happened to show a very familiar face: Mewtwo. Reports from popular Pokémon centric sites such as Serebii and Dogasu have detailed the teaser as a recreation of the scene in Pokémon: The First Movie, in which the villainous Pokémon wakes up. Beginning with a black screen, the words ‘The Legend is Back’ appear. A voice, who according to Dogasu could potentially be the original Japanese voice actor for Mewtwo, Masachika Ichimura, quotes “What is this place? Who am I?”, which is immediately followed by a close up of Mewtwo’s eyes opening. The title then appears as Pokémon The Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution.

No other information is known about the movie at this moment in time. However there is a high chance this movie will be a retelling of the original movie fans remember. The 20th Anniversary film that released in 2017, Pokémon The Movie: I Choose You, offered a retelling of the original series’ first episode. The story took a drastic departure from the main series source material and essentially became its own separate canon that has been continued in the latest addition, Pokemon The Movie: Everyone’s Story. The 2019 movie can be expected to do the same.

The teaser seems to be targeting nostalgia driven fans and newcomers from Pokémon GO, akin to the upcoming Nintendo Switch titles Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! And Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee!, which focus on the original 151 monsters.
