Pokémon Go was all the rage not too long ago, with its popularity rapidly decreasing once the craze ran its course. That’s not to say that the game is dead, however, just that it’s not even half as popular as it was in its heyday not too long ago. However, developer Niantic are looking to bring back a host of old players, and give something back to those who’ve remained loyal to the game, with a number of new features scheduled to be released.
Chief among them is the ability to trade Pokémon with other players, something which is scheduled to be released in the not too distant future. Now, senior product manager Tatsuo Nomura has opened up a little bit more about trading in Pokémon Go. Speaking to Polygon at the Games Development Conference, he said that trading will have to be done with local players, saying:
“[Trading] won’t be through the internet. You shouldn’t be able to exchange your Pokémon with someone who is 100 miles away from you. The person needs to be in your proximity.”
Mr. Nomura also went on to speak about how the overall goal of Pokémon Go was to get players to interact with each other, but in the game and in real life; something which he says is still a big factor behind some of the upcoming features, even if it does have the by-product of somewhat penalizing isolated players. As Mr. Nomura said:
“I wasn’t really thinking of trading as a way to solve the local area spawn issue. That was more, we have a couple Pokémon that only spawn in a couple regions, and that was the hope, that some Pokémon you have to know someone or find someone who lives in certain regions and meet and exchange. We don’t want to just have that be an online game that you can just exchange virtually.”
So, it looks like isolated Pokémon Go players are just going to have to hop on a bus if they want to expand their Pokédex.
