Pokémon Go Lunar New Year: Minccino, Red Pokémon & More

All you need to know about the game's new event.

Minccino

It’s time to welcome in the new lunar cycle, and the Year of the Rat, so Pokémon Go is celebrating that with another new event. It will feature some newly released Pokémon in the wild and in eggs, as well as a Minccino based Limited Research day.

The first part of the event focuses on red Pokémon, and runs from January 24th to February 3rd. Some special red Pokémon will appear more in the wild, including Charmeleon, Vulpix, Parasect, Voltorb, Jynx, Magmar, Magikarp, Flareon, Slugma, Wurmple, Corphish, Kricketot and Foongus. There’s a nice variety of old, new, common and rare Pokémon in that bunch, so it’s a good time to get catching. Another Pokémon making more of an appearance in the wild is Gyarados, and not only that, but it will be available in its shiny form. A nice bonus, and definitely a good reason to go and search it out if you see it on your nearby Pokémon section.

Red Pokémon will also be hatching more frequently in 7km eggs, including Shuckle and Foongus. These eggs will also have a chance to contain another new Pokémon, Darumaka, the Zen Charm Pokémon. Its evolution, Darmanitan, looks to be one of the new strongest Fire types in the game, so another good reason to get out and walk those eggs.

During this event, any Gift you open has the chance of including Rare Candies, so open your max every day if you’re looking to boost your supplies. All trades done during the event will also have a higher chance of the Pokémon going Lucky, as well as going Lucky with the other trainer as well. Any Lucky Pokémon cost half the dust to power up, so it’s helpful to max out your stronger raid battlers.

On February 2nd, just before the event finishes, there’s a Limited Research day featuring the Pokémon Minccino. During 2pm to 5pm on this day, there will be more research tasks from spun stops that will give Minccino as a reward. It also has the chance of being shiny, so make sure to get as many tasks done as you can. After the event ends, Minccino will start appearing in 5km eggs. Also on this day, Pokémon such as Rattata, Raticate, Pikachu, Sandshrew, Nidoran (Male and Female), Sentret, Marill, Zigzagoon, Plusle, Minun, Bidoof and Patrat will all be more frequent in the wild. There’s lots of shiny chances there too, so if you’re lucky, you will end this event with a whole bunch of them.
