Iran has become the first country to outright ban Pokemon Go, the biggest AR app in the world right now, over “security concerns”.
Coming from the BBC, the judgement has been passed down by Iran’s High Council of Virtual Spaces, who oversee virtual activity for the country. Many are worried that the app may cause security issues despite widespread internet restrictions for Iranians.
Although they are the first to completely ban Pokemon Go, Iran isn’t the first country to impose restrictions. Indonesian police are prohibited from playing the game while on duty and the American city of New York is also looking to stop 3000 sex offenders from signing up while they are still on parole.
At its peak, Pokemon Go boasted 25 million players in the United States alone. However, since it has gone through numerous controversies and is still in an unfinished state with plenty of bugs, that number is expected to have dropped significantly.
The community for Pokemon Go is still keen, though they are seeking assurances over the game’s future. Pokemon Go bar crawls and dating apps have cropped up because of the phenomenon that doesn’t look like ending soon, but is still going through some issues nonetheless.
