Poem of the Week: Saphire Rose – ‘Puked Words’

1st Place
‘Puked Words’ by Saphire Rose

Yes, sometimes I do,
wish I felt pangs of excitement
as I lie breathless and shaking
on the bathroom floor.

Often I do,
wish in that moment,
I could seize a pen
and turn my blood into blue ink.

But my blood has frozen
and my veins turned frosty,
I try to make a hole in my arm with the nib
but my flesh has turned rocky.

It simply will not penetrate.

Oh how I envy
those whose mouths curl up into watery grins
as life’s knife draws slowly in and out.
Those who trace patterns in the bloody puddles,
or freeze it and turn it into sculptures,
or drink it,
chug it down in one go
then puke it all out again.
And again.
