Poem of the Week: ‘Entertainer’ by Patricia Frazer

Cultured Vultures Poem of the Week

As usual, we had a fantastic turnout for this week’s round of poetry. Sadly, there can be only one winner. Happily, there are also two runners up, so let’s take a look at the second and third place winning entries.

3rd Place

‘When the Door Closes’ by Andrew Scott

When the door closes I can breathe again.
The anxiety given carried itself away.
I am alone in my safe heaven.

Everyone sees a calm, relaxed demeanor,
not seeing the twitches under the skin
or hearing the hardened breathing.
Those moments are hidden
until when my door closes.

Hard to explain the nerves bending.
The ones hidden away in public,
screaming to just run away.

It is a constant fight
that frightens me each time.
Though I smile through it.
Truly feel secure and safe
when the door closes.

2nd Place

‘Puzzle Pieces’ by Sasha Kasoff

Death

You shut doors so firmly

Erasing them off the wall

So only a faint trace remains

An imprint

Like a mistake

In our lives’ sketchbook

The absence marks

Something lost forever

I have heard

You give your soul away

In little puzzle pieces

To everyone you love

To every heart you touch

And you don’t really

‘Move on’

Until every last piece

Is back in the box

Memories may be token things

A weak comfort

In the face of so much loss

But if it’s all you have

Share them

In defiance of death

Don’t let them grow dusty with pain

Remember

Even when the tears come

Smile

Even when it hurts

Each of us hold

A handful of puzzle pieces

Warding off death

With love

1st Place

‘Entertainer’ by Patricia Frazer

For a penny, in the slot machine,

A little dancer twirled and bowed,

It was my earliest waking dream

To strut and trill and thrill the crowd.

So stage school followed, endless nights,

Dull days at down-at-heel hotels,

I plumbed the sorrows and delights

Of show-biz heavens, show-biz hells.

So now, the circle loops me in,

Grown old with waiting for my chance,

My role in life is parrot-piped,

Put money in the slot. I’ll dance.
