Poem of the Week: ‘Cariñoso Asesinato’ by Ashlie Allen

1st Place
‘Cariñoso Asesinato’ by Ashlie Allen

I tied your fingers
to my ankles and
walked on your 12 feet hair
I sat on your bones
and played in your hollowness

I washed your eyes
and steamed your nails
I tenderized your flesh
and made it plum

Through all this,
I cried very hard,
afraid of my
gentlest movements
and tiniest sounds

If you could have heard me
as I mourned for murder
and affection,
you might have told me
to shut up
or smacked my mouth so
my heart couldn’t express its grief

I wrap myself in your wet tangles,
rocking forward and backyard
while giggling in demonic tone

Sure, it excited you
being terrorized by a lovely face
But my ugliness clogged your blood
and my beauty gave you something
to die for
