Poem of the Week: ‘New Horizons’ by Martin Haddelsey

2nd Place
‘Alrigo’ by Ashlie Allen

Man with the chestnut curls,
You paint names
on skulls but you
know no one

They say your name
is Alrigo and that you come from Venice

You were walking
through a gray sheet of drizzle
when I first saw you
Your countenance
was sweet with depression,
yet your pupils were glimmering with malice

I wanted to feel your hand
and explore the softness of your beauty

I had heard the stories,
that you were a demon drenched
in the dark skin of a Venetian

I tracked you anyway
and found the shadow
of your skeletal fingers
reflecting against
a Laurus nobilis’s leaf

When I entered
the green house,
we both fainted
and forgot our names
