PlayStation Trophies Can Now Be Used To Buy Games (With A Catch)

If you’ve ever felt like hoovering up all the easy Platinum trophies you can find is thankless busywork, serving no purpose other than to give you a quick boost of dopamine with the sound of that beautiful ding, prepare to change your mind.

Sony are now rewarding completionists by allowing them to trade in their earnt trophies for points, which can then be used to buy games from the PlayStation Store. This applies to silver, gold, and platinum trophies – there’s no room for bronze fans, sadly.

Here’s how it breaks down:

– 1 point per silver trophy
– 10 points per gold trophy
– 100 points per platinum trophy

What can you do with these points? Well, if you earn 1000 of them, which is the equivalent of ten plats (I only have half that many over years and years of trophy collecting), you can use them to get a $10 voucher to redeem on the PS Store. Unfortunately, this isn’t retroactive – you still spent money on Orc Slayer for almost no reason at all, I’m afraid,

However, and this is a bit of a bummer to a large part of the PlayStation fanbase, the rewards scheme only applies to those in the United States. That might change at some point in the future, but I wouldn’t hold your breath.

Personally, I think this is a good move from Sony, even if it’s on their very limited terms. I do worry that we will see more awful games like this pop up on the store as lazy developers rush to make a quick buck, however. What do you think of the new system? Will you be polishing off a bunch of plats? Let us know down below.
