Percy Jackson Adaptation Coming To Disney+

One of the more beloved young adult book series of recent years is hopefully getting the adaptation it deserves.

Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson novels are to be adapted for TV on the streaming service Disney+, following a lengthy fan campaign on social media asking for just that. The show is currently in the early stages of development.

Riordan made the announcement in a video with his wife Becky, which appeared on Twitter this Thursday. He followed this with a written statement in which he reassured fans that the adaptation would be “following the storyline of the original Percy Jackson five-book series, starting with The Lightning Thief in season one. Rest assured that Becky & I will be involved in person in every aspect of the show.”

The Percy Jackson franchise follows the adventures of a young man who turns out to be a demi-god, drawing heavily on Greek mythology throughout. It covers five books, “The Lightning Thief”, “The Sea of Monsters”, “The Titan’s Curse”, “The Battle of the Labyrinth”, and “The Last Olympian”, along with two companion books, “The Demigod Files” and “The Demigod Diaries.”

The first two books of the franchise have previously been adapted into feature films in 2010 and 2013 respectively. The film versions performed well at the box office, but drew mixed reviews, with most pointing specifically to their divergence from the source material as a negative point – as did Riordan himself on experiencing film studios’ usual butchery approach to adapting novels. The films were distributed by 20th Century Fox – as such, after last year’s Disney-Fox merger, the rights would presumably have found their way into Disney’s hands. However, thus far nobody involved with the films has been attached to the TV adaptation.
