Paddington was undoubtedly one of the most delightful family films of 2014, so the news of a sequel has us popping out the marmalade to celebrate. A worldwide gross of $288,667,178 also certainly helped make a second film plausible.
Paul King will return to direct, and two heavyweight icons of British cinema have joined the cast in the form of Hugh Grant and Brendan Gleeson. Grant stars as faded actor Phoenix Buchanan (a parody of himself, no doubt), whilst Gleeson will be a tough guy safecracker known as ‘Knuckles’ McGinty.
Sally Hawkins, Julie Walters, Peter Capaldi, Jim Broadbent, Hugh Bonnerville, Madeleine Harris and Samuel Joslin will reprise their roles from the previous film. Ben Whishaw returns to voice the lovable bear, as he tries to recover a priceless pop-up book for his Aunt Lucy’s 100th birthday.
The Paddington Bear books by Michael Bond have sold over 35 million copies to date, so their huge level of popularity should ensure that Paddington 2 will be a hit when it arrives on November 10, 2017.
