Overwatch Is Getting Olympic Games Skins for Rio 2016

Either someone has far too much time and too many resources at their disposal to fake this or it’s legitimate, but according to a couple of leaks, Overwatch will be getting new skins to commemorate this year’s Olympic games in Rio.

The image above comes from the streamer LacedUpLauren, who was sent a special promotional package by Blizzard. She unboxed the whole thing and shared the clip below to accompany it.

According to the blurb collated by NeoGaf:

“Celebrate Overwatch’s inaugural Summer Games with special Summer Games Loot Boxes – available for a limited time!

“Each contains four items, at least one of which is guaranteed to be a Summer Games skin, spray, highlight intro, emote, victory pose, player icon or voice line. There are more than 90 Summer Games items to collect – they’re not available for purchase with in-game credits, so loot boxes are the only way to claim them.”

It looks like we know almost for certain that Zarya, Tracer, and Lucio will be getting unique skins to tie-in with the Games in Rio. However, it appears as if we will also be getting our hands on some new sprays, along with other tat that make loot boxes so infamous:

Nothing is known for certain about when these new additions will be coming to the game, but considering that the Games kick off on August 6th, expect confirmation around that time. However, as a lot of Overwatch updates seem to come on Tuesdays, it could even be today.

This is some savvy marketing from Blizzard. They know that Overwatch has a fairly wide reach between the casuals and the hardcore, so it makes sense to capitalise on this with a tie-in for the biggest sports event of the summer. It also neatly ties into the lore, as Zarya has been a champion powerlifter in the past.

One of the biggest hints from this box is Lucio kicking a ball, hinting at a rumoured mini -game that’s been long in the offing. Would you play Overwatchball?
