Overwatch: Here’s Sombra’s Animated Short

For fans of Overwatch, Blizzcon 2016 has been an event to get excited for. After months and months (maybe it was even years?) of constant teasing from Blizzard, the game’s newest hero, Sombra, was expected to be unveiled.

Breathe a sight of relief, because that just happened along with the reveal of the stealth hacker Hero’s very own animated short: Infiltration. It features Widowmaker, Reaper, and a whole lot of naughty doings at Volskaya Industries:

While probably not as charming as The Last Bastion, Infiltration does a good job of introducing Sombra, the second post-launch hero added to the game. While she initially seems like she’s in cahoots with the nefarious Talon, it transpires that Sombra is in it for herself, or perhaps a different party entirely. A cameo from a familiar face rounds out the short perfectly.

Here’s the game’s website with the rundown on Sombra’s abilities:

“Stealth and debilitating attacks make Sombra a powerful infiltrator. Her hacking can disrupt her enemies, ensuring they’re easier to take out, while her EMP provides the upper hand against multiple foes at once. Sombra’s ability to Translocate and camouflage herself makes her a hard target to pin down.”

Sombra will come equipped with a machine pistol (probably making her a poor option from long range), the ability to use camo to turn invisible, hack her enemies to stop their abilities, and what looks like her Ultimate with the EMP: a shockwave that disables all barriers and hacks all heroes. She seems tremendously overpowered on paper, but she’s no doubt going to be balanced well into the actual game itself. She’s playable at BlizzCon and will be available on the PTR sometime next week.

It’s been a long and agonising wait for Overwatch fans to finally see the newest Hero. Dedicated groups have been painstakingly scouring all the hints available in the ARG, which quickly became more of an annoying distraction than a meaningful hunt. Countdown after countdown went by with little usable information to progress the search, leading to a bit of discontent.

The big reveal has been in the offing for so long that it feels a little flat to me now it’s actually hear me, though I can appreciate that her introduction could be a game-changer. A more immediate unveiling would have worked much better, but if Blizzard were making sure the short was ready in time, it kind of makes sense.

Wait, Ana never got an animated short when she was revealed. Fix that, Blizz.
