Outlaw King Announced as Opening Film at TIFF 2018

Outlaw King

The Toronto International Film Festival, better known by its acronym, TIFF, announced today that they have selected their opening film for 2018: Outlaw King. For those who haven’t heard of this one yet, this one is sort of a different version of Braveheart, only starring Chris Pine instead.

Set in the 14th century, it follows Robert the Bruce, who led some outlaws against the strongest military in the world, England, who had control over, you guessed it, Scotland, at the time.

This may sound like a lesser version of Braveheart, and TIFF has a strong record of selecting non-starters in the Oscar race as openers for their festival. A few recent examples include Borg vs McEnroe, The Magnificent Seven, Demolition, The Judge, and The Fifth Estate.

Still, you have Chris Pine as Robert the Bruce, with Aaron-Taylor Johnson and Florence Pugh rounding out the main cast as well, but the main appetizing piece of info here is the director: David Mackenzie, whose last film, Hell or High Water, was one of the best films of 2016, and had four Oscar nominations.

Netflix has this one, and plans to begins streaming on November 9th. As we saw last year, Mudbound became the first Netflix film to break-in big with the Academy, so if Outlaw King overcomes the TIFF opening film curse, it might get a couple nods down the road. TIFF begins on Thursday, September 6th and runs through Sunday, September 16th.
