Oscar Winners 2023: Best Animated Feature

Never bet against Guillermo del Toro when it comes to the Oscars.

Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio wins the Oscar for Best Animated Feature. The film beats out Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, Turning Red, Marcel the Shell With Shoes On, The Sea Beast and Turning Red to clinch the top prize. The award was presented by Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt.

Set in fascist Italy during the rise of Benito Mussolini, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio begins with Geppetto mourning the loss of his son Carlo after he’s killed in a bombing. Years after Carlo’s death, Geppetto carves a boy figurine out of pine. The puppet is then brought to life by the Wood Sprite, a magical fairy who takes pity on the grieving man.

Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio is one of three Pinocchio adaptations that were released in 2022. There was Disney’s live-action version of Pinocchio last year, which was a massive flop, and Pinocchio: A True Story was also released last year, though not many have seen it – I’m not sure they need to.

This is one of the first years where Disney did not take home the Best Animated Feature prize. Last year it was Encanto, and the year before that it was Soul. Has Disney lost its touch, or is this a year of exception? Guess we’ll find out next year if Disney still has what it takes to keep up in the animation game.
