Jessica Chastain is our big winner in the Best Actress category. Chastain wins the Oscar for her performance in The Eyes of Tammy Faye. Other Oscar contenders include Kristen Stewart (Spencer), Olivia Colman (The Lost Daughter), Penélope Cruz (Parallel Mothers) and Nicole Kidman (Being the Ricardos). With the exception of Stewart, Colman, Cruz and Kidman have won Academy Awards prior to this nomination. The award was presented by Sir Anthony Hopkins.

The film follows the structure of a traditional biopic, and we follow the life of Tammy Faye, from her childhood fascination with religion to her courtship with a young Jim (Andrew Garfield). Chastain’s Tammy is outspoken and passionate about her beliefs, constantly managing to keep hold of her inner brightness despite the men around her, including her husband Jim, trying to overwhelm her with darkness.

Tamara Faye was an American evangelist, singer, author, talk show host, and television personality, and is known for her contributions to the LGBTQ+ community.

While the film itself lacks a certain nuance and depth, Chastain’s transformation into Tammy Faye is astounding and absolutely authentic. She truly deserves the award. Chastain also won the SAG award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role.
