Official Trailer For The Personal History of David Copperfield Looks Like Wicked Fun

Hugh Laurie and Peter Capaldi in the same movie? Here's all my money.

The official trailer for The Personal History of David Copperfield is here, and suddenly, the Dickens’ tale looks less dreary and loads more fun. It’s hard to properly fathom what’s going on from the trailer, but if a movie has Tilda Swinton pouring salad dressing on Dev Patel’s face having mistaken it for medicine, and also yelling about a donkey-free zone, I don’t know about you but that alone has enticed me to watch the movie. We will have to wait for a while though, since the movie is pegged for a 2020 release.

As you guessed from the title, this is an adaptation of Charles Dickens’ novel David Copperfield, with Dev Patel in the lead role. You must be thinking, wasn’t David Copperfield umm, white? Yes he was, but this is a reimagining of the character and his journey – a modern retelling of a classic tale. In an interview with Sky News, director Armando Iannucci spoke about his reasons in doing the film, and that he “wanted something that was celebrating what Britain is – the life and creativity, the fashion, the music”.

From the trailer and the early reviews on Rotten Tomatoes (which has the film at an impressive score of 95% after 42 reviews), it certainly appears that the movie has succeeded in communicating all that. The cast attached to the movie is mightily impressive as well, with the aforementioned Dev Patel, Hugh Laurie, Peter Capaldi, Tilda Swinton, Ben Whishaw and many other fantastic British actors.
