Official Trailer for Dear Evan Hansen Stirs Online Debate

How old is too old in Hollywood?

Dear Evan Hansen

Universal Pictures released the official trailer for Dear Evan Hansen, starring Ben Platt in the titular role he originated in Broadway, and having a 27 year old in the role has kicked up quite the online debate.

What’s The Film About?

Directed by filmmaker Stephen Chbosky, who brought us The Perks of Being A Wallflower, Dear Evan Hansen is a musical film that features a star-studded cast, with the aforementioned Platt, Julianne Moore, Amy Adams, Kaitlyn Dever, Amandla Stenberg, Colton Ryan, Nik Dodani, DeMarius Copes and Danny Pino. The film follows Evan Hansen, who feels like an outsider at school. This all changes when his classmate Connor (Ryan) takes his own life, and Evan’s letter to himself is discovered among Connor’s belongings.

What’s the Online Debate About?

The debate is regarding Platt’s age, and that he looks too old to be taking on the role of a high school boy. The original musical was staged in 2016, and while Platt could pass for a teenager then, it is harder to do the same now, five years later. They did try to make him look younger through hair and makeup, but it is quite apparent that he is an older man.

Not everyone agrees that they should have gone with a younger Evan Hansen, since Platt did such a stellar job with the role that the character has become synonymous with his name – he also won a Tony for his performance. Thus, it makes sense that the first film adaptation should be helmed by him.

Dear Evan Hansen will be released September 24, 2021.
