NXT Champion Tommaso Ciampa To Have Neck Surgery

This could rule him out for a very long time.

To say that the NXT Champion Tommaso Ciampa being injured is a blow to NXT is an understatement. Ciampa is currently one of the hottest members of the NXT roster. His on and off friendship/rivalry with Johnny Gargano has become one of the best storylines to ever come out of Full Sail Arena.

The news of his injury was broken last week by the Wrestling Observer Newsletter where they also announced that Ciampa was attempting to work through it until after NXT Takeover: New York in April where he was set to face Johnny Gargano in an NXT title match. However, that match is unlikely to happen as Dave Meltzer announced on Wrestling Observer Radio that Ciampa will be having surgery for his injury and could have anywhere between six to fourteen months to recovery from said surgery.

With that time frame in mind, it is almost a certainty that Ciampa will have to relinquish his NXT Championship in accordance with WWE’s thirty day rule. The rule states that if a champion, for whatever reason, cannot defend his/her title within thirty days then the wrestler will be stripped of their title. With Ciampa seemingly having to vacate the title, the question now becomes: who will take his place as champion?

Whatever the outcome, all that can be hoped for is that Ciampa recovers quickly and that the NXT and WWE fans will see him in the squared circle sometime soon.
