Not Like This: Matrix Reboot Being Planned By Warner Bros., Wachowskis Not Involved

The Matrix reloaded

According to sources for The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. are trying to reboot the Matrix franchise.

WB are “in the early stages of developing a relaunch of The Matrix”, with Zack Penn tentatively writing the script. Penn has previously worked on X-Men: The Last Stand (oh god) and had a hand in the story for Avengers Assemble.

Rumour also has it that Michael B. Jordan will be the lead, but the project is still in its infancy. Neither of the Wachowskis are involved with the project so far, though the source stresses that WB want them onboard in one way or another. Joel Silver is reportedly wanting to get involved, though the stumbling block of he and the Wachowskis not being buddies might be an issue.

This isn’t the first talk of a new Matrix movie in recent times. Keanu Reeves has said that he would be up for returning as Neo, though he insisted that any new entry in the franchise would have to involve the Wachowskis. However, seeing as how WB want to start over, it doesn’t look like that will be the case. If he keeps being John Wick, we’re fine with that.

It makes next to no sense to reboot the franchise, in my opinion. The world established by the Wachowskis in 1999 still has plenty of stories to tell, so starting from scratch seems wasteful. The later two movies, Reloaded and Revolutions, didn’t please everyone, though they were financial successes.

Still, a reboot always felt inevitable. Can’t wait to see the trailer with twenty dips to black in a minute and a loud horn throughout.
