Nintendo Could Be Making More Movies Soon

Super Mario Bros movie

Despite being one of the biggest game companies of all time, Nintendo have never really dipped their foot into the crazy world of cinema. Unless you count the Super Mario Bros. movie, but let’s just pretend that Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo didn’t have to drink to get through the production of that mess.

Nintendo certainly know how to keep a rabid fanbase, though, and it looks like they’re trying to expand their fans by exploring different avenues, including film production.

Here are some of the best excerpts from an interview www.asahi.com conducted with Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima:

On investing in new IP:

We aren’t looking to make money simply by directly licensing our characters, but we must invest heavily in new areas such as film production going forward. When we’ve finalized that sale, we’d like to use part of the proceeds in these areas.

But they won’t be going live-action after the last debacle:

That live-action film didn’t do particularly well at the box office. From now on we’d like to do things ourselves more than just license something.

They might be going down the Pixar route:

We have a strong stable of IP, so we’d like to be able to do something like them. So we’ll keep that in mind as we work towards making this a reality.

Shigsy is obviously going to be involved:

Of course. He’s taught many other game producers, and as a result of that we’re able to have him consider how best to use our IPs. We’d like his input in our film business as well.

They’re hoping to make them profitable:

Our primary goal is to increase the number of people who know our IPs. Our core business is to create games and hardware, but the question becomes how to make that business more effective. And of course simple advertisement is no good. So we’d like to create other businesses that can support that goal.

We might see a Mario or Zelda film:

We’d like to use IPs that are really quite popular. But I can’t exactly say “we’re doing Mario!” All I can say is that we’ll make something everyone can enjoy.

Well, there you go, they sound like they’re going all in with films soon. Looks like fans can rest easy, there’s little chance that we’ll be subjected to live-action awfulness from them ever again. Saying that, a live-action Zelda film could have been very, very sweet. #
