Nintendo At E3 2017: All You Need to Know

Super Mario Odyssey Hat

Nintendo don’t do business like any other AAA video game publisher. That’s a fact. They do things their own way, and they will be damned if they change that to meet the current industry standards, evidenced by how they’ve conducted themselves during E3 in recent years.

Instead of hiring orchestras and comedians to pitch their games, Nintendo now go for a much smaller-scale and actually try to show off what they’re making. It’s an approach that does not get them as many headlines, but feels much more genuine. We all want Shigsy to put a Wiimote to his mouth in front of a live audience again, but it isn’t likely.

Nintendo’s E3 2017 will see them going for that tactic yet again. Ahead of the show in June, they revealed their plans for the biggest gaming show on Earth:

Nintendo Spotlight – June 13th 2017 (1700 BST)
Here’s the meat and potatoes of the presentation: the new games still to come in 2017 for Switch and the DS. They put an emphasis on Super Mario Odyssey, but it’s likely we’ll see more from Splatoon 2, too. They may just shock everyone and announce a new Metroi–sorry. That’s not happening.

Nintendo Treehouse – June 13th 2017 (immediately follows Spotlight)
We’re climbing back up the Nintendo Treehouse this year, which will give us a closer look at the games Nintendo have in-store. Plenty of Switch and DS titles will be showcased, which will include discussions with the developers, as well as Treehouse members.

Live Tournaments – June 13th-15th 2017

Nintendo’s E3 booth will host a couple of tournaments during E3, including competitions between ARMS and Splatoon 2 players. ARMS is not currently out yet, so it will be interesting to see how much time gamers have to get competitively-minded with it by the time E3 rolls around. A slightly more limb-y Smash Bros.? Doubtful, but it will definitely have an audience.

Miscellaneous
– Super Mario Odyssey will be playable for the first time on the E3 floor.
– The booth will open at noon on June 13.
– All of the showcases will be broadcast on Nintendo’s socials and website.
– Curiously, Nintendo’s official promotion choose to call their handheld console the 3DS, despite it looking like they were giving up on 3D by going back to the 2DS.
– More is still to be announced.
