Nightdive’s System Shock Remake Is Actually, Definitely Coming Out

It’s been a long, winding road for Nightdive’s belated System Shock remake. Due to come out some years ago with one final delay befalling it from a March release window, the game has now officially “gone gold” and will be releasing on May 30th, 2023 as planned.

From the press release:

The System Shock remake combines the cult gameplay of the iconic original game with all-new HD visuals, updated controls, an overhauled interface, and all-new sounds and music.

Never-before-seen enemies, quality-of-life gameplay tweaks, a revamped hacking system, and visceral new combat options featuring a brutal dismemberment system also await players new and old.

A legion of hostile and mutated creatures — created and controlled by the delightfully villainous SHODAN herself — await players as they make their way through Citadel Station’s all-new areas, flexing their puzzle-solving skills and hacking prowess to reach new sectors of the station.

Players will also encounter traps, puzzles and secrets in their pursuit of (hopefully) defeating SHODAN once and for all. A combination of stealth, cunning, and futuristic weaponry will be required to survive. When the System Shock remake arrives, players’ puzzle-solving and survival skills will be put to the test.

It is somewhat surreal to hear that System Shock is soon going to be a finished game people can actually play. While it’s not had the most protracted development cycle ever (that honour may end up with Beyond Good & Evil 2), it’s certainly up there. I personally have been including it on “biggest new games of x year” lists for so long that it’s almost a tradition. Now we’ll have to wait and see if it can live up the iconic status of the 1994 original after years of waiting. No pressure.

System Shock launches May 30th, 2023 for Steam, GOG, and the Epic Games Store. Early buyers will also receive a free copy of System Shock 2: Enhanced Edition, which will launch after. Console versions will launch in the future.
