If you enjoyed The Fifth Element you might want to check out the first trailer for Valerian. The sci-fi actioner comes from the same director, Luc Besson and there’s plenty of weird looking aliens to get you psyched.
So what’s going on here? A lot, let us tell you. Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, to use its full title, sees a pair of special agents on their journey through a mega city called Alpha. There’s a lot of sci-fi here: an intricate, Star Wars-esque future cityscape, colourful CGI aliens, Star Trek style sliding doors and underwater habitats to name a few. Imagine a space opera turned up to eleven and that’s what we seem to be getting here.
Who, what and where?

Valerian stars Cara Delevingne (Suicide Squad. Plus other, better movies) and Dane DeHaan (Chronicle) as special government operatives in a far future where humanity coexists with just about every alien species and his dog. DeHaan plays the titular Valerian, here characterised as something of a womaniser, while Delevingne co-stars as Laureline, his more old fashioned partner.
You’re probably wondering right about now whether this is adapted from some comic book or other. The answer is yes, obviously. It’s 2016 everybody. Valerian and Laureline is a long running sci-fi comic book series which began way back in 1967 and came to a close in 2010. We can’t say we’re familiar with it here at Cultured Vultures, but we do hear it’s well known for its humour and ahead of its time ideas.
