I think we might be experiencing the Keanu Reeves version of the McConaissance. He has blessed us with John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, and now, we have Chapter 4 in the wings for 2021. Not only that, he is a new character in Toy Story 4, with the new trailer highlighting his character Duke Caboom and hyping us up even more for the movie’s release on June 21st, 2019.
In the latest addition to the franchise, we follow Woody and the rest of the gang as they join Bonnie, their owner, on a road trip. Toy Story’s narratives have always driven a deeper meaning, so the fourth movie is no exception. Bonnie creates a new toy, which is really just a spork with eyes and a mouth plastered on. This elicits the discussion of what defines a toy, since the spork has an existential crisis and runs away. It is unable to shake its cutlery origins, and doesn’t understand what makes it a toy.
“Why am I alive?”, Forky asks Woody, which leads us to existential questions of our own that has plagued us since the beginning of time. We are still unable to rationalise if our existence is purposeful or a cosmic accident. Should a kid’s movie be making me think so much? But we all know who the true target audience of the movie is; it is for adults like us who grew up watching the series. So all those little kids better not make a ruckus come opening weekend – it is our time to play.
