New This is England ’90 Trailer Releases the Raves

This is England 90

I remember watching This is England with my brother and dad when I was around 13. Still technically not really being old enough to watch it, as it’s an 18, it was one of those films that stuck in my head. That may have been out of shock due to the excessive swearing and racism, but looking back, without it, it would have lacked verisimilitude, realism and that authenticity that made it so great. Basically, the racism and swearing made it.

Now I’m in hope that the newest spin off, This is England ’90 will do the same; containing a pleasant mixture of characters we’ve warmed to over the years such as Woody, Lol, Milky and Shaun. Director Shane Meadows managed to capture each era close to perfection. Even though we may have not experienced or remembered the 80’s or 90’s, Meadows has made a gateway into the past. With the lack of sentimental feelings built for those who are younger, it contrasts as that nostalgic feeling is still created, whether it’s by the clothing or by the music, we’re taken back to both the social and physical setting of Manchester in the 90’s and the era of raving fuelled by ecstasy.

As suggested by the trailer, we aren’t expecting any less than what we’ve seen before: someone’s going to fuck up (maybe Kelly?) and they’re all going to pull through together and solve whatever shit went down, a typical tale that would happen in a “closely knit” friendship group. However, as we all know, this most likely won’t turn out to be that ever so typical tale expected as there are always complications within this group of friends, we’re just waiting for this further revelation of the mysterious obstacles the group is having to face in nineties Manchester.

As I was watching the traile,r it was like someone placed a wasp in my head, unlike a bee, which would sting once and die, this motherfucking wasp kept at it, one sting after another, one question after another. What’s wrong with Kelly? Will Shaun go to college? What’s happening with Lol and Woody? WHO KNOWS? Oh right, we will when it airs in September.

If you’ve not already watched This is England and the spin offs, I already have your summer nights planned for you – get watching.
