February offers a bounty of opportunities for specialised comic series. Of course, titles centred around romance for Valentine’s Day appear this month. All 28 days in February present a celebration of Black History Month. In addition, comic series or story arcs from the year prior have ended, so the month grants fertile ground to launch new series. Here is a list of upcoming first issues, Valentine’s holiday specials, and Black History Month anthology comic series you need to add to your  pull list with these new comics of February 2022.

Spinning out of the Aquaman: The Becoming and Black Manta storyline, Aquaman #1 follows the Aqua-family as a conspiracy unravels. Brandon Thomas again takes the helm as writer and is joined by phenomenal artists Chuck Brown (Bitter Root) and Sami Basri.

2. Fox & Hare #1 – Jonathan Tsuei, Stacey Lee, & Yoshi Yoshitani

Fox & Hare made my previous list of comics to check out in 2022. Now that the first issue’s February release date is around the corner, it’s time to put this years’ slickest-looking cyberpunk comic back on your radar.

Solicit information reveals how these Asian creators take back Asian-originated cyberpunk aesthetics in their tale about an alliance between a black market code and two dangerous mercenaries named Fox and Hare. Writer Jonathan Tsuei also authored AfterShock Comics’ Search for Hu, which recently wrapped up. For Fox & Hare #1, Tsuei is joined by a creative team whose artistic style appears like they will mesh in perfect synthesis with Tsuei’s intriguing script.

Vault Comics is already celebrating their fifth year in the industry by releasing a slew of intriguing new titles. Fox and Hare will be a comic to watch this year, and I can’t wait to get my hands on that gorgeous first issue.

3. Iron Fist #1 – Alyssa Wong, Michael YG, & Jay Ramos

If you’re looking for more comics with Asian creators’ names attached, look no further. A new five-issue Iron Fist miniseries releases in February from Alyssa Wong and Michael YG – and it looks like the first issue will pack a powerful punch.

Iron Fist #1 tells Danny Rand’s story post-wielding the Iron First mantle. After relinquishing the powers and responsibilities attached to the superhero name, Danny finds himself shocked when a mysterious newcomer appears to have taken over the Iron Fist mask. Meanwhile, demons attack cities, threatening people’s lives around the world. Danny begins a quest to unmask this stranger wielding his mask and battling against foes, their hands blazing with the chi powers from Shou-Lao the Undying.

Gear up for action-packed mystery during this all-new take on the Marvel hero.

4. Life Zero #1 – Stefano Vietti, Marco Checchetto, & Andres J Mossa

Famous for his work on the recent Daredevil run with Chip Zdarsky, artist Marco Checchetto
joins Stefano Vietti and Andres J Mossa for a comic series from Ablaze Publishing. The February release of Life Zero #1 begins a propulsive new action series.

First published in 2015, their creator-owned miniseries is getting an international release for the first time. The solicit information mentions a world-changing event involving a cloud and mass extinction. Based on the preview pages drenched in both blood and moody snowfall, we can anticipate a grounded story at the intersection of science-fiction, adventure, and horror. The magnificent hyper realistic art style alone should draw plenty of eyes to Life Zero.

5. Manor Black: Fire in the Blood #1 – Cullen Bunn, Brian Hurtt, & Francesco Francavilla

Manor Black: Fire in the Blood #1 continues the horror-fantasy mashup narrative from the Manor Black flagship title. This 4-issue miniseries from Dark Horse Comics and the Harrow County creators brings gothic terror to readers this February.

Patriarch of a family of formidable sorcerers, Roman Black recruited a young fire mage to bestow his powers on, in order for her to eradicate the evil lurking inside his home, Manor Black. She successfully inhabited the house’s totem spirit inside herself at the end of the first series. However, Fire in the Blood #1 will centre on whether the totem will remain controlled, and whether Roman’s corrupt children will lay waste to Roman’s plans for his mage.

6. Marvel Voices: Legacy (2022) #1 – Various Creators

Celebrate Black History Month by reading another Voices: Legacy anthology installment from Marvel Comics. Packed with superstar creators such as Victor LaValle, J. Holtham, and Cody Ziglar, the Marvel Voices: Legacy 2022 edition lifts up essential Black voices and characters in the comics industry.

Look forward to comic tales about sensational Wakanda, the brilliant young superhero Moon Girl, and Sam Wilson’s heroic legacy. Luke Cage hits his 50th-anniversary milestone this year, so we can expect a super story about the superhuman as well. Black heroes are lauded on every page in this glorious comic collection.

7. Milestones In History (2022) #1 – Various Creators

Black History Month will also see the release of the anthology comic honouring Milestone Media characters and Black history. DC Comics’ Milestones In History presents a group of stories where Milestone icons narrate true historical stories about Black trailblazers.

Take a journey through time as the oversized one-shot comic book shines a light on Black pioneers from centuries past. The solicit synopsis mentions comic stories about Hannibal and the Queen of Sheba’s military campaigns, Alexandre Dumas and his literary achievements, and WWI dogfights between Eugene Bullard and the Red Baron. Unpack history through a unique narrative vehicle using Milestone heroes like Static, Icon, and Hardware as voices to the past in this upcoming comic entry.

8. New Masters #1 – Shobo Coker & Shof Coker

The 2019 Creators for Creators Grant recipients finally showcase their comic series in February. Nigerian brothers Shobo and Shof Coker burst onto the comic scene with a ground-breaking vision, blending Afrofuturism, sci-fi, drama, and adventure in New Masters #1.

Published by Image Comics, the six-issue miniseries features a crew of outcasts in West Africa, grappling for power against alien colonizers. Nigerian mythology fuses with fantastical science-fiction in a world where a power struggle emerges to obtain an ancient alien artefact. Landscapes rippling with muted hues and colour-popping character designs on the preview pages piqued my interest immediately.

Advance reviews have already praised New Masters for its originality and vibrant world-building. Expectations run high for this freshly authentic comic series.

9. Playthings #1 – Jon Clark, Travis Williamson, & April Brown

Scout Comics’ Black Caravan imprint focuses on edgy horror pushing conventions. The publisher announced a few upcoming 2022 Black Caravan titles that all seem worthy of mentioning. However, February will see the release of Playthings #1, whose cover singularly gives goosebumps to anyone who dares to take a peek.

Reminiscent of a Twilight Zone and Black Mirror crossover, Playthings opens with young mother Alison Hart waking up to find herself tied down with liquorice pieces inside a bright room. Confusion turns to pure terror as the toys surrounding her in captivity begin moving around autonomously.

Playtime morphs into a surreal horror story as Alison attempts to figure out how she ended up in a waking nightmare and – more importantly – why her daughter Emma has disappeared.

10. Rogue Sun #1 – Ryan Parrott, Abel, Chris O’ Halloran, & Becca Carey

Rogue Sun #1 launches the newest series in the Radiant Black superhero universe from Image Comics. Main character Dylan Siegel begins a personal journey after the events of Radiant Black’s epic 54-page one-shot event comic, Supermassive.

The cosmic Radiant Black Massive-verse expands with a supernatural twist in Rogue Sun #1. Here, readers are introduced to Dylan in a father-and-son legacy comic. After the mysterious death of his estranged father Marcus Bell, Dylan discovers the man he hardly knew was actually the famed New Orleans superhero, Rogue Sun. We’ll see Dylan inherit his father’s mantle and attempt to solve his murder.

Any Radiant Black fan needs to pick up a copy of the superhero murder mystery title this February.

11. Step by Bloody Step #1 – Simon Spurrier, Matias Bergara, & Mat Lopes

Step by Bloody Step #1
Step by Bloody Step #1

Comics can be defined in many ways, but ultimately, comics tell a story through sequential art. The Image Comics series from Si Spurrier, Matias Bergara, and Mat Lopes presents a fantasy opus told solely through sequential art, devoid of any text.

Four double-length chapters contain this unorthodox comic tale. The fantasy-mecha story follows an armoured giant and a young child as they walk through a deadly world. Bandits and creatures lurk at every turn. However, if the child and her massive guardian stop walking at any time, some force in the earth continues pushing their feet onward.

Step by Bloody Step relies solely on visual storytelling. The art looks stunning, and the comic’s lack of language will allow readers to walk alongside the characters at their own pace. This comic should cement itself as a special achievement in the modern comic era.

12. Strange Love Adventures #1 – Various Creators

Strange Love Adventures #1
Strange Love Adventures #1

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, DC Comics returns with their sickly sweet comic special. Strange Love Adventures #1 contains 8 stories in its oversized anthology, marrying the romance genre with strange superhero antics.

The solicit tells readers they can look forward to a Jurassic-era tale as old as time on Dinosaur Island and an Odd Couple parody with The Flash and…Gorilla Grodd? Fans of DC’s new HBO Peacemaker series will screech happily reading “Love of Country,” starring the titular anti-hero and his adorable eagle sidekick who has stolen my heart, Eagly. Star comic creators such as Stephanie Phillps, Devin Grayson, Collin Kelly, Jackson Lanzing, and Ram V contributed their talents to this anthology. Strange Love Adventures promises love in all its bizarre forms.
