Netflix Grants Orange is the New Black an Early Release

Orange is the New Black

The inmates of Lichfield Prison have been given an early release this year, with season three of the prison drama hitting six hours early.

Following the story of selfish white girl Piper Chapman as she begins a prison stint for a decade old crime, Orange also explores the diverse personalities she finds on the inside. They include a Russian mob lieutenant, a born again former drug addict and and international drug smuggler.

Normally, Netflix drops its original shows at around 3AM EDT (New York time, basically), but this year the streaming service dropped it at 9PM. Not a big deal, except that’s considered ‘primetime’ for the big American TV networks.

The networks aren’t showing many original shows at the moment, what with the US television season running from September to May. But might this be Netflix trying to send a message? Is this the first move in the company’s plan to defeat normal telly?

At a rough count, Netflix have already aired at least nine scripted original shows so far this year, not to mention all the stand up comedy specials. And for the most part they’ve dumped a season’s worth of episodes on us at once. What’s next in their plans to control our eyes? Three months of evening news available before it’s happened on a lazy Friday afternoon?

It’s worth noting that Netflix still has another Marvel series, Jessica Jones, to air at some point this year. If they want to lay the gauntlet down against ‘primetime’ telly, you couldn’t pick a safer bet.

Anyway, enjoy Season three of Orange is the New Black. By the time we get season four, Netflix will have become self-aware and viewing will be mandatory. All hail the TV streaming overlords!
