Monster: Season 2 – Everything You Should Know

Monster
Monster

Naoki Urasawa’s Monster series, which aired from 2004 to 2005, is a classic drama and suspense anime highlighting the best and worst parts of humanity. The show is about how a neurosurgeon named Kenzou Tenma saved a gunshot victim named Johan Liebert, instead of switching patients and helping the town mayor. The act of kindness, however, leads to a nightmare as Johan grows up to be a psychopathic murderer.

It’s been well over 15 years now, so is Monster’s story finally going to continue? Will fans finally learn of Johan’s fate? Here’s all you need to know about Monster: Season 2.

When Is Monster: Season 2 Being Released?

Ever since the initial run ended in 2005, Monster: Season 2 has not been renewed or confirmed.

Monster’s anime run completely adapted all 162 chapters of the manga. Although it had an open ending, it probably wasn’t because Naoki Urasawa was baiting fans into a second season. It was likely because he intentionally wanted to keep the ending vague and leave the future of that world to the viewers’ imaginations.

What Could Monster: Season 2 About?

Even when an anime is officially done, fans can’t help but think: “What if it didn’t?” And usually, you can come up with some headcanon for how the story would continue. There are multiple directions Monster: Season 2 could take after the ambiguous ending in Season 1.

The show could go on with Johan’s reign of chaos if you choose to believe he escaped at the end of Season 1. Alternatively, a more optimistic turn of events could lead to the show focusing on Johan trying to change his ways and coping with a world that only sees him as a monster of pure evil.

Which Studio Could Make Monster: Season 2?

VAP, Shogakukan-Shueisha Productions, and Nippon Television Network all co-produced the first season of Monster, while Madhouse animated it. In case Monster: Season 2 gets approved in the future, these are the companies you’d want to keep an eye on.

VAP started in 1981 and has produced some of the most well-known dark and gritty anime. Other than Monster, VAP is also the producer behind Death Note and Elfen Lied.

Established in 1967, Shogakukan-Shueisha Productions seems to excel with light-hearted shows, which makes it unusual that they helped make Monster. Other anime they’ve produced is Spy x Family and The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.

Nippon Television Network began in 1952 and is actually a frequent partner of VAP when producing anime. Together, they made Parasyte and Death Parade.

Madhouse has animated hundreds of anime ever since its creation in 1972. They animated One Punch Man and No Game No Life.

Where To Watch Monster

Even though Monster: Season 2 isn’t coming, it’s still a great time to be a Monster fan this year. As great as the show is, it’s nowhere near as famous as some other major anime titles, not to mention that it’s an old show. As such, finding a streaming platform to watch it used to be an issue, but not anymore.

Netflix used to only have the first 30 episodes when Monster was released there in January 2023, but all the episodes are there now.

You can also watch Monster on Amazon Prime Video, but not in the US. You can use a VPN to switch your IP address to Japan, where it isn’t blocked.
