Mogwai Guitarist John Cummings Leaves Band After 20 Years

Legendary, Glaswegian, purveyors of post-rock, Mogwai have announced that long time guitarist John Cummings has left the band to “pursue his own musical projects”. This year Mogwai have been celebrating their 20th year together as a band, with Cummings having been a member of the band for those twenty years; he joined in 1995 after the trio of Stuart Braithwaite, Dominic Aitchison, and Martin Bulloch, founded the band and had begun playing gigs around the place.

In their official statement, the band have wished Cummings well in his future endeavours, so it would seem that his departure has been an amicable one. However, the show must go on, and the band have stated they will continue on creatively as a quartet, but will be bringing in other musicians to fill in for Cummings on their upcoming live dates.

Below is the full statement, albeit it a short one, from a band of few words. Well, they are an instrumental band, aren’t they? Oh, and below that, my favourite Mogwai song, and perhaps one of my all time favourite songs.

We are sad to announce that John Cummings has decided to leave Mogwai to pursue his own musical projects.

We will continue as a four piece of Dominic Aitchison, Stuart Braithwaite, Martin Bulloch and Barry Burns and shall be joined on our upcoming live shows by Scott Paterson and Luke Sutherland.

We wish John all the best with the future.
