Deadline have reportedly let slip that Matt Reeves’ ‘The Batman’ will now be a reboot of the character and kickstart a standalone franchise without Ben Affleck, the current face of the hero. Deadline’s claim notes:

“[…] with Matt Reeves rebooting Batman for a new standalone franchise, likely with a new actor to play the Caped Crusader after Ben Affleck’s stints in Batman V Superman and Justice League.”

The Batman has suffered a fairly troublesome development history upon its announcement in October 2014. Initially set in the DC Extended Universe, Affleck, alongside playing the titular character, was set to direct and co-write the movie with Geoff Johns in 2016. The film was all set for filming during the first half of 2017, however Affleck stepped down as director in January 2017 because he wanted to divert his full attention into playing the role of Bruce Wayne.

One month later in February 2017, Warner Bros. announced the title of the film as The Batman with Reeves, now set to direct and co-produce. Reeves was an excellent choice to go with considering his previous work directing Cloverfield and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. In July 2017, Reeves confirmed that he was re-writing the script, and from this point onwards gradual updates have informed fans that it’s been going well despite the delays it has suffered with.

Where does this leave Ben Affleck’s Batman in the DCEU? Will he still receive his own film in the universe, or could this be a sign of a departure for the character sooner than we thought?
