Matt Reeves has recently provided some news on his standalone Batman movie during a Television Critics Association panel this week. Discussing the screenplay, he noted that:

“We are working on getting our draft [in] the next couple weeks,” Reeves continues: “Right now, my head is totally into the script. Right now, I’m going to be leaving here to go back to work on the script.”

Reeves was announced as director for the project all the way back in February 2017, so to hear that the initial draft of The Batman is nearing completion is exciting news. He also discussed the involvement of Ben Affleck after it was implied that he wouldn’t be returning a few months ago. At this moment in time, Affleck is in discussions with the director, however nothing is set in stone. Against pre-existing implications, the film may also remain in the DC Universe, albeit very distantly, Reeves claims:

“There are ways in which all of this connects to DC, to the DC universe as well,” Reeves said. “We’re one piece of many pieces so I don’t want to comment on that except to say that I’m focused very specifically on this aspect of the DC world.”

It seems likely The Batman could be set in the DC universe but very much ignore everything that is going on in the franchise and focus purely on its own narrative. Furthermore, Reeves has discussed what the style of the film will actually be like:

“I’ve talked about making it a very point of view noir-driven definitive Batman story in which he is investigating a particular case and that takes us out into the world of Gotham.”

Described as a very personal narrative for Bruce Wayne/Batman, if it is done well, The Batman could be an intriguing and captivating look at the character in a way that hasn’t been seen on-screen before. More news will be reported as and when it comes, so keep checking back for more information.
