Looks Like There Won’t Be Any More Universal Monster Movie Reboots

Well, according to the Hollywood Reporter, the “Dark Universe” monster movies won’t be happening. They seemed to have had a lot of plans, including a remake of Bride of Frankenstein.  But, as so often happens, Tom Cruise fucked everything up. Well, actually, no, a film he recently starred in, The Mummy, got horrendous reviews and did poorly at the box office. Universal seems to have been in this thing for the money all along. I’m utterly shocked.

While the Universal monster movies of the thirties and forties are, uh, universally beloved by horror fans and classic film buffs alike, they also have the unique distinction of being one of the first shared universes in cinema history. Major crossovers of characters like Dracula, the Wolf Man, and the Invisible Man began in earnest in the early 1940’s with films like Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man, House of Frankenstein, and House of Dracula.

There were quite a few reactions to the news in the Twitter-verse, but my favorite was from Jimmy George, writer and producer of low-budget cult horror flicks like WNUF Halloween Special and Call Girl of Cthulhu:
