Kermit The Frog Voice Actor Has Left The Role

Inheriting a legendary role is tough for anyone, but when you’re taking over for Jim Henson himself, it’s an almost unenviable task. But Steve Whitmire, who took over the role of Kermit the Frog, has been doing a great job since taking over one of the first and most personal Muppets that Jim Henson invented. According to the Muppet fan site Tough Pigs (awesome name!), Whitmire has left the role and seasoned Muppet performer Matt Vogel will be taking it over immediately.

No word on the reason for the seemingly sudden replacement. Not that it really matters. Maybe the guy just needed a break. After all, he’s been voicing Muppets since 1978, on the original Muppet Show, beginning with Rizzo the Rat. He took over the Kermit role shortly after Henson’s death in 1990. He has 127 acting credits on IMDB, almost all of which are Muppet-related.

Replacement actor Matt Vogel has almost exclusively worked with Muppets, too. He started in the late 1990’s, so he has plenty of experience and passion that he’ll bring to the role.

I hope you’ll join me in wishing Steve Whitmire the best in whatever he chooses to do in the future.
