Lizard Squad Attack Blizzard, Bring Down Battle.net

World of Warcraft

A report on IGN states that Lizard Squad, the infamous hacking group, recently claimed they are responsible for DDOS attack on a Blizzard datacentre which resulted in all Battle.net titles going offline in the US and Europe.

Games should be back to normal server status now, however, Lizard Squad claim they managed to cause World of Warcraft, Diablo 3, StarCraft 2 and Hearthstone to all go offline. Members of the group also claim to have gained access to some Blizzard emails.

Lizard Squad sent out a tweet after the attack saying:

“EU Blizzard #Offline – WoW #Offline, Diablo 3 #Offline, Starcraft 2 #Offline, Hearthstone #Offline @fbiarelosers @AppleJ4ckxoxo”.

A similar tweet was also sent out for the US.

No reason for the attack has been stated, but the speculation is that this is a result of Blizzard shutting down the highly popular Warcraft private server Nostalrius. Nostalrius was popular due to the fact that players could play the game for free, whilst being back in Warcraft 2006’s classic “Vanilla” server.

An engineer for Blizzard stated:

“It looks like we experienced a potential DDoS on one of our datacentres. Initial impact appears to have ended and our engineers put up some buffers to resolve the issue, and realms should start recovering.” He also went on to add. “We’re continuing to monitor and work on mitigating the impact. Apologies for the inconvenience, and we’ll be sure to provide updates as they continue to come in.”

What do you think? Is this a reaction to the Nostalrius server being shut down by Blizzard? Or did Lizard Squad do this because they can? Comment below, let me know!
