For the most part, your experience in Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth’s Dondoko Island is completely separate to your activities in the main game. While you can invite people you meet in various sub-stories to come and stay on your island, time on the island only passes when you’re there. It’s a mode that you’re free to engage with as much or as little as you like, outside of the mandatory tutorial section in Chapter 6 anyway. That being said, if you choose to fully engage with this mode, you’ll find it to be a very lucrative way of making money for your adventures off the island too.

The two most straightforward ways of earning money while on Dondoko Island is by reaching star certification milestones, and by completing guest tours. Once you’ve fulfilled the requirements to reach the next resort star, Matayoshi will gift you a large cash sum for your efforts. Meanwhile, once you reach the point where you’re inviting guests to stay on the island, you’ll recieve Dokobucks and a percentage amount in cash based on how satisfied they were at the end of their 3 day stay. Later on, you’ll be able to accomodate more guests, which further increases the money you earn.

However, there is a third, more direct way of converting your Dokobucks into cash that can be spent in your main adventure. While on Dondoko Island, speak to Delphine, the friendly dolphin who lets you travel from Hawaii to Dondoko and back again. While speaking to her, you’ll have the additional option to convert your Dokobucks into dollars. During the earlier stages of Dondoko Island, this isn’t worth doing, but once you’ve reached five stars and you start having plenty of Dokobucks to spare, the best thing you can do is start converting them into real bucks.
