The Gandhi of Cultured Vultures, James Gates, fills you in on how to lead a more fulfilled life.
SOME BASIC RULES FOR BETTER LIVING
1) There are never as many full stops in life as we think. People, places, objects and feelings are very rarely gone for good and can often come back around when we least expect it. Try not to think of everything in black and white. Life doesn’t work that way.
2) Being a good person who is kind, compassionate, treats others with respect and doesn’t fuck people over is more important than flimsy matters like whether or not you eat at McDonalds, buy new trainers every month, eat gluten-free or put your recycling into separate boxes.
3) However messed up and insecure you may think you are, many people out there are a lot more messed up and insecure than you could ever be (and they are less willing to admit it too). You are probably doing a much better job of keeping it together than you realise. Give yourself a pat on the back every now and again.
4) Never stop working on yourself: do exercise, read more books, try meditation, go to a new place each week. Self-improvement pays dividends and will leave you with new skills which you’ll have all your life.
5) If there are any toxic people in your world, get rid of them as soon as you can. However fun they may be to hang out with, they will drag you down with them sooner or later whether they intend to or not.
6) It’s far better to fuck it up and learn from it rather than strive to be perfect all the time. Failure can be inevitable but it doesn’t have to be pointless.
7) DO NOT TAKE LIFE TOO SERIOUSLY. Life is often fun and fulfilling but also really weird and shit sometimes; none of us asked to be here. With that in mind, have fun, be nice and make improvements where you have to, but try and avoid beating yourself to death over your: job, education, relationship, body shape, cooking ability, etc. Life is too short.
