The future of the Metal Gear series may be in jeopardy after publisher Konami fired Hideo Kojima as part of their much-publicized descent into insanity (we already had a rant about Metal Gear Survive), but the endless love and respect for the series still clearly resonates among the gaming community.
Want an example of the continuing popularity of the Metal Gear franchise? The latest trailer for Paper Mario: Color Splash brilliantly parodies classic Metal Gear gameplay, with Mario infiltrating a military base. Best of all, the hilarious trailer even showcases one of the most beloved aspects of the classic stealth series: the cardboard box.
And before you ask, no, Color Splash won’t be a full-on Metal Gear-style Mario game (one can only dream), but will instead be a traditional kid-friendly adventure with the inclusion of a Paint Hammer tool which allows you to draw objects in your environment. It hits Wii U on October 7, making it one of the few upcoming major releases for the system which is now on life-support.
