Kung Fury II: What We Know So Far

Arcade machine robots, iron-clad Nazis, laser raptors, and some of the best aesthetics of 80’s nostalgia ever witnessed. In 2015, David Sandberg’s Kung Fury was a hidden gem of cinematography and creativity. Started as a film project on Kickstarter, the title quickly gained critical acclaim and smashed its $200,000 initial crowdfunding goal by over $400,000. Featuring outstanding visual effects, a heart-pumping techno soundtrack (with a “True Survivor” cover from David Hasselhoff), tons of 80’s pop culture references, and insane, over-the-top action and characters, Kung Fury instantly became a cult classic among audiences and critics alike.

Now a sequel is in the works and the hype for another Kung Fury adventure is greater than ever. But what do we know so far about the new film? What do fans have to look forward to? And what new and interesting details are waiting on the horizon?

Here’s the skinny on everything Kung Fury II:

THE SAGA CONTINUES

Firstly, this is the official storyline from a press release on the new film:

“It’s 1985, the best year ever. Miami is kept safe under the watchful eye of Kung Fury, the greatest damn cop of all time. Kung Fury’s Thundercops are the ultimate police force assembled from across history to defeat the villainous Kung Fuhrer, Adolf Hitler. After the tragic death of a Thundercop causes the group to disband, a mysterious villain emerges from the shadows to aid in the Fuhrer’s quest to attain the ultimate weapon. Kung Fury must travel space and time itself to save his friends, defend the prestigious Miami Kung Fu Academy, and defeat evil once and for all.”

From this information, we can gather that the film will pick up where the last one ended, with Hitler returning to Miami in 1985. It also seems that a lot will be going on, from the introduction of a new villain, to the death of a memorable character from the first film (hopefully not Triceracop), and another romp through time for our kung-fu cop to serve plenty of fury-fisted beatdowns to baddies.

SANDBERG BACK AT THE HELM

David Sandberg is once again putting his film prowess to work on the sequel, leading the film under his Laser Unicorns production company which made the last movie. Pelle Strandberg will also be working with Sandberg again, reprising his executive producer role under LU. However, this time, this crew will be joined by another team under KatzSmith Productions, featuring David Katzenberg, Seth Grahame-Smith, and Aaron Schmidt, all of whom worked together as producers on the 2017 smash-hit thriller IT. With so many talented individuals having their hands in this film, prepare for even crazier visuals and special effects, as well as insane action on an entirely different level.

THE CAST JUST GOT UPGRADED

If the plot and production studios don’t pique your interest, then these two stellar cast additions will. Standing alongside Sandberg’s Kung Fury are none other than Michael Fassbender (X-Men: First Class and Days of Future Past) and the newly-announced Arnold Schwarzenegger (Terminator). The presence of these two heavy-hitters of action films are significant additions to the Kung Fury saga and it will be interesting to see what roles they will play. Fassbender in particular is not known for comedic roles, so might he be the new villain to fight alongside Adolf Hitler? These two will also be joined by the legendary David Hasselhoff who will be reprising his role as the computerized “Hoff 9000” who made a small cameo at the end of the first film. Will any other legendary stars be joining in on the action? We can only imagine.

Through all of these awesome additions and more details to come, one thing is for sure: this is going to be one wild ride that should not be missed. Kung Fury II is slated to release sometime in 2018, with filming scheduled to start this summer.
