Konami Announces New Castlevania Game, But It’s Not What You’d Think

Castlevania

First it was Metal Gear, and now Konami have set their sights on the Castlevania franchise. They’ve announced that they’re developing a new Castlevania game called Grimoire of Souls, but it’s a mobile-only game that’s only been announced for Japan so far. At the very least, it’s not called Castlevania Survive.

The new game follows Genya Arikado, who fans might know from Aria of Sorrow and Dawn of Sorrow. I’ll openly admit, I had to use Google for that one. As is usually the case in Castlevania games, someone or something is looking to resurrect Dracula, so your boy Genya rushes off to stop things. He’s flanked by Lucy, a researcher who’s partnered with Genya.

You’ll also be able to use fan favourite characters, with the characters confirmed so far being Alucard, Simon, Charlotte, Shanoa and Maria. Emphasis is being placed on pairs, so it’ll be interesting to see how that plays out. The game itself is boasting up to four player co-op, with “real-time co-op around the world”, so perhaps that’s confirmation that the game will be coming to the West after all. Lastly, players can also duke it out in 4v4 competitive games.

Like Metal Gear Survive, Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls looks like a departure from the series norms, but we’ll have to wait and see if this game is more of a success. At the very least, it’s not a new Pachinko game.
