Joker Sequel in the Works, Todd Philips in Talks To Direct (UPDATED)

Things change when your movie makes a lot of money.

UPDATE: according to Deadline, THR’s report is complete lies.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, a Joker sequel is in the works, with Todd Philips in talks to reprise his role as director. This includes teaming up with Scott Silver to pen the screenplay of the sequel (the two co-wrote Joker together). While promoting his movie, Philips was adamant that there wouldn’t be a sequel, insisting that Joker was never “set up to [have] a sequel. We always pitched it as one movie, and that’s it.” He has since changed his tune, commenting that he would be open to it given the right conditions.

Considering Joker’s stellar performance at the box office (it crossed the 1 billion mark recently), and with all the Oscar buzz surrounding Joaquin Phoenix’s performance, it makes sense that Warner Bros. would green-light a sequel. The article also mentioned Todd Philips coveting more than just a Joker sequel, requesting the rights to develop a portfolio of DC origin stories.

Warner Bros. chairman Toby Emmerich was unwilling to accept this, since all their DC deals were for one film only. However, Todd Philips did manage to wrangle one another DC story from the meeting, though there isn’t news as to what the DC option is. Joker is the fourth DC movie to cross the 1 billion mark, which is no mean feat taking into account the R rating the movie received. The other DC properties that crossed the billion mark are: Aquaman ($1.15 billion), 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises ($1.08 billion) and 2008’s The Dark Knight ($1 billion).
